Why do we need this book?

This book has been in the works for over three years and has brought together over 30 years of experience in exercise, health promotion, and clinical counselling.  It brings together four siloes of research; fitness culture, exercise science and psychology, neuropsychology, and clinical counselling. It is one of the first books to pull apart how the industry of exercise gets in the way of mental health while providing the reader with HOW to integrate exercise when experiencing the immobility of depression.

I have written it with many readers in mind but focused on those that are looking to add exercise to their lives but don't know where to start. I have peppered this book with my own stories of working in the fitness and health promotion industry (while adding humour to make it a little more fun to read than a text book). Finally, by bringing in the neuroscience (i.e., the polyvagal theory) I was able to explain why exercise is now noted as an evidence based treatment for depression and other mental health challenges.

For those interested in starting an exercise program, this is the perfect read; offering all considerations before starting and how to create a lifelong plan. For those interested in integrating exercise for anxiety, depression, and everything in between this book is for you; offering research speaking to exercise as a treatment for mental health issues while providing specific exercise prescriptions for both anxiety and depression.

Finally, if you are a practitioner in mental health or in exercise and other body work professions (i.e., physiotherapist, chiropractor, massage, and the like) this book will address the considerations for mental health practice while respecting scope of practice. Additionally, it will present trauma-informed considerations for those in exercise leadership and health care.
